Hello and welcome to our blog!
This blog post is about our excursion to an Amish farmer and the Cherokee Heritage Center.
In the morning we drove to the farm of Mr. Miller, an Amish farmer. He showed us his farm and told us about his lifestyle. In comparison to us the Amish decide on not buying cars and they don’t own mobiles and other electricity. Their children go to an Amish school where they get prepared for their life as Amish farmers. It is very common that Amish children stay in the community for their whole life. It was very interesting to hear about the reasons why this farmer lives like this. He said that things like mobiles are bad for social relations, and while it is hard to imagine to live without all of this, I still think that it sometimes also has good sides to renounce on a few things. All in all the man was totally normal and nice, and now I have a totally different picture of the Amish in my head.
After that we had lunch at the Amish Cheese House, which was also very good.
Our last stop was at the Cherokee Heritage Center, where we first went through a museum about the history of the Cherokee and in first place about the Trail of Tears. Then a guide showed us the housing of the Cherokee throughout history. They had different houses during winter and summer, so that the housing always fit the weather. We also played ‘Stickball’, which is a game of the Cherokee, with the goal to hit a fish on top of a long stake, which was very funny. In the end we went through a nice arrangement of different model-houses of Cherokee people, who all had their own story and did different things for their living.
In summary this was a very nice trip and especially the Amish farmer, Mr. Miller, spoke about a lot of interesting things.
Thank you for reading and stay tuned!
